1The essays in this number of Journal of the Short Story in English: Les Cahiers de la Nouvelle have been chosen from the papers presented on 10-11 March at the Colloquium on the Irish and Irish-North American Short Story at Belmont University , co-sponsored by the Université d’Angers and Newberry College. Participants included scholars from France, Great Britain, and North America, as well as Irish guest writer John McGahern and Irish-American writers Jennifer C. Cornell and Catherine Brady.
2This issue is made up of five essays devoted to the work of John McGahern, as well as essays on James Joyce, Frank O’Connor, Sean O’Faolain, Elizabeth Bowen, and Fitz-Hugh O’Brien. We are especially grateful to Mr. McGahern for his enthusiastic participation in the Colloquium, and we wish to thank all the Colloquium participants for their contributions. We issue a special note of gratitude to our co-hosts Michael O’Shea, Editor of Studies in Short Fiction at Newberry College and Dominique Dubois of the Université d’Angers.
